Critical Thinking Workshop
AAHE National Assessment Conference
June 2002, Boston MS,

Dr. Ruth Green provided a 3-hour workshop on assessing (and impacting) student development of critical thinking (CT). She proposes a 5-step model that begins with:

  1. Faculty/campus consensus on a definition and expectations for student abilities related to CT. Other steps in the model include
  2. Identifying an explict, share model for CT,
  3. Developing an assessment plan,
  4. Selecting an instrument/process,
  5. Collecting and analyzing data, and
  6. Using the data to design learning experiences, faculty development, etc.

The workshop included having participants complete a "Sample CT Test" that included items from the most frequently used commercial tests for assessing CT. For additional information contact Ruth Green (rgreen1@gmu.edu).
