Assessing University Life: A Model and Process, a presentation

Dr. Ruth Green, Assistant Director of the Office of Institutional Assessment and Cassandra Jones presented Assessing University Life: A Model and Process at the Virginia Assessment Group fall conference in Virginia Beach in November 2001.

Session Objectives:

  • Provide background on the assessment of student affairs/university life.
  • Provide information about GMU's Division of University Life commitment to assessment.
  • Share the University Life model for developing assessment plans, outcomes, and measures for units and major activities.
  • University Life Directors will discuss their assessment process and share plans and instruments that have been developed. They will emphasize the ways in which they have used assessment to make programmatic improvements.
  • Participants will share information about assessment activities in university life on their respective campuses.

Few institutions have institutionalized assessment of their student affairs/university life activities. In 2000, GMU's Division of University Life made a strong commitment to build an assessment process for all university life offices and programs. To that end, an assessment committee was formed. To date, the committee has developed a model and has been working with various university life programs and offices to develop assessment plans, processes and instruments. The work of this committee, the University Life Assessment model, challenges and triumphs will be shared in this session. The session will also provide sample assessment plans (e.g., Women's Center, Take Back the Night Rally) for various offices and activities. The session will end with a discussion of activities from other campuses.
