Dr. Ruth Green, Assistant Director of the Office of Institutional Assessment, presented Critical Thinking Models, Processes, and Instruments at the Virginia Assessment Group fall conference in Virginia Beach in November 2001.Abstract: This session provides background information about major approaches for assessing cognitive outcomes --- intellectual development, critical thinking skills, critical thinking attitudes, moral development/ reflective judgment. Participants are introduced to several cognitive development models and they complete a sample test that will incorporate items from various available instruments (e.g., Watson-Glaser Critical Thinking Tests, California Critical Thinking Skills and Attitudes tests, Cornell Critical Thinking Skills Test). Next, participants consider the strengths and weaknesses of various approaches and instruments and consider which models and instruments might be useful for responding to their own campus needs and to the SCHEV requirement for assessing critical thinking competencies.
